With today’s concerns for the environment, and the desire for more green alternatives, polished concrete is fast making itself known as a viable option for homeowners and businesses alike. Along with its superior durability and easy maintenance, polished concrete can be integrally colored or stained, and does not require any sealers or coatings which are petroleum based and may release vapors into the air for years. Advances in equipment have made it possible to produce a high gloss floor that never needs waxing, and with the ability to expose the aggregate in a glossy mirror like finish, similar to terrazzo, polished concrete has become an economic alternative to expensive marble, granite and tile.

CLOSEUP OF EXPOSED AGGRAGATE

Creating this effect requires a multistep process of grinding the surface down, using machines equipped with a series of diamond segmented abrasives. Like sanding wood, you gradually progress from a coarser grit to a finer grit abrasive until you have reached the desired degree of smoothness. There are many levels of polished floors that stop short of being truly polished with the finest abrasives, but have their own unique quality and appearance.

CONCRETE POLISHING EQUIPMENT

Almost any concrete, old or new, can be suitable for polishing, although it is important to become aware of the inherent characteristics of polished concrete, and have your own slab examined before making your decision on which type of decorative concrete will suit your needs. If planning a new home or building, it is always recommended to have your contractor consult with your polishing professional to help them achieve the best conditions for polishing.

This is 10 year old concrete with very large aggragate that has been exposed during polishing to a glass like finish.
