THE PROCESS

Step One - Each mold must be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated before being assembled.

Step Two - Once all of the parts are together, the screws are tightened and the mold is secured to prevent leakage. Some of the molds have over 40 screws.

Step Three - After mixing the concrete and filling the molds, the mix is settled by using an electric vibrating table and tapping, to force the bubbles to rise to the top.

Step Four - After setting for 24 hours, the screws are removed and the mold is carefully taken apart. It is then kept moist for 2 more days, to strengthen the curing process.

Step Five - Hand finishing the piece can include grinding, sanding and drilling.

Step Six - Each piece is hand stained with a variety of colors and techniques.

Step Seven - Sealers are sprayed on to create a rich finish that will last for years outdoors.

THE STAINS

The colors displayed in our catalog represent only some of the fabulous looks we can achieve. We have spent a considerable amount of time working with various color mediums, and have found over time, that not all mediums work well with everything we make. Our choice of color medium depends greatly on the final texture and porosity of the piece we are working with.

Although we do use acid staining when necessary, and also mix colors in with our concrete, our favorite and most frequently used medium is our water based concrete dye stains. Due to their extremely low level of VOC’s, (volatile organic compounds), less than one percent when diluted for use, they are a much more environmentally friendly alternative to toxic acid stains, which is better for us and the environment. Along with these dye stains, the paints we use also have an extremely low level of VOC’s, and there is no lead in either our paints or our stains.

Along with being safer for the environment, our stains and paints come in a wide range of colors, not available in acid stains. They are UV and weather resistant, and can be applied with or without sealer. We can achieve an opaque or translucent effect with our paints, and the dye stains produce a beautiful mottled effect, similar to the acid stains.

Because the colors are long lasting, we are able to match the color months later, if a new piece is to be added to a matching set.

We believe our coloring techniques not only enhance the detail and character of our pieces, but set them apart from anything being offered on the Big Island today.
